Original plans

Does anyone know where the original plans for Finnjet are? Has Aker Yards inherted the Wärtsilä archives?

It might be good to ensure the plans are kept safe in case someone might some day make a virtual model of the Finnjet in e.g. 1977, 1986 and 2004. Especially if we lose the real life version. I think a rough model (without the surface materials, etc.) wouldn't be that hard to do these days.

Come to think of it, is anyone of the members familiar with 3D stuff?

I am about to build a 3D model of her, since 2005, based on the General Arrangement of 1977. it is still incomplete, but I made a lot of testrenderings. I am looking for a plan in greater scale than the normal GA, especially the ships safety plan (turvallisuuskaavio), which was on deck 7 near the radio station visible for the passengers. A request via E-mail at Masayards a few years ago remains unanswered...

Great idea! As I am an engineer I'm quite familiar with 3D-CAD-systems (especially CATIA) and it would be a pleasure for me to create a 3d-model of her.
Wherefrom can I get the plans?

If there's no legal issues, maybe someone could simplify the plans and publish them online for ship model builders. It would be nice to see radio controlled GTS Finnjet, maybe few meters of length, splitting the waves on full speed on the nearby lake ... =)

I have no experience building ship models because I have been doing car models, but when I saw paularai's Finnjet I thought something like that would be a nice longterm project... I'm sure the result would be a mess but at least at the end I could say I have tried :D

maakrapu:

Actually a "fully working" FINNJET rc-model is already made with electric engines

http://static.rcgroups.com/forums/attachments/1/7/6/3/3/4/a1530231-12-DSC00983.jpg

That model maybe the most exciting model I've ever seen... If I only could ever see it in action...

Here's some more links & info of that model:

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=646087&page=3

http://www.rcline.de/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=80

ofcourse, real iron made model and small turbines fitted in would be even more greater.

In Finland there's one guy who builds all of his scale models from steel....

@paularai:

Do you have any drawings as I want to build a 3d-CAD-model of "Jetti"? What was the basis for your stunning rc-ship?

I only have the General Arrangement which of course is extreamly useful as it has measurements on it.

I tried for over a year to get hold of the plans but in the end used the following method, For making the hull I cut the hull from a Revell 1:400 Finnjet kit into slices app every 2cm. I then drew around each section onto paper, I then used a photocopier to enlarge the drawings to 1:100 scale. These enlargements were used as templates in order to cut out plywood ribs.

To make my model I enlarged the GA side view of the hull up to 1:100 scale and cut it out of wood, then each of the above ribs was placed on the cut out side view 8cm apart. I then filled all the sections with blue foam and then covered in fibregrlass. I am afraid the rest was sanding to shape whilst comparing the model with photos untill I was satisfied with results.

The measurements etc for the superstructure was taken for the sides from the GA and for the front and rear I scaled up photos taken directly of the front or stern.

If this sounds longwinded you should have tried making it!:!:

I may still have the rib drawings which I could email to you, do you have the General Arrangement? I can send that too.

You can see some of the build process on my photobucket account.

Actually, and I have mentioned tis to various people, I still have the mould for the Hull, Should people wish to make a model of Finnjet it would save a hugh amount of effort (3 months in my case) of making a hull, I can make a copy for you for the price of materials (est £40-£50).

The superstructure is relativly easy and dosen't require such a hugh amount of hard dusty work.

Of course the hard bit would be posting a 2.15meter model to Finland/Germany or wherever.

Happy to help if anyone is interested, it would be great to see another working model!

The General Arrangement of the Finnjet was being published 1977 in various maritime magazines, "Hansa- Schiffahrt- Schiffbau- Hafen" 6/77, or "Schiff & Hafen 4/77. I use them for my 3D- model, but they're not really good for CAD (very small scale)

Hi Kepa

Funny you should mention model gas turbines, thats another hobby of mine. See the link below where I have built a model gas turbine power boat. Im still trying to figure how to get it into my Finnjet model!

Im afraid my model only has working engines, rudders, bow visor, bow ramp, stern ramp, extendable and retractable stabilizers working from a gyro, working container crain, smoke generator, turbine sound generator and lights. all controlled by radio control.

I have too have built the Revell kit twice and I had an earlier attempt at a radio contol finnjet (see below) although this one isnt very scale, its the one at the top of the picture and is approximately 1:144 scale or 150cm in length.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v226/paularai/Finnjet_Keep_sakes_007.jpg

And later accurate model as discribed above. at 1:100 scale whilst under construction.

Its funny how many people say they like the orange sinks in the bath rooms, I guess fashion is cyclical and oranges and browns will be high fashion again.

We've of course talked about this before, but I'd still be interested in getting a cast of the hull from you to make a model of my own. But right now I don't ave anywhere where I could store the hull (let alone actually work on the model), so this'll have to wait a few years for me. But do keep the mold!

I wish all of you could have experienced her in the first decor.

The original decor was amazing, I particularly love the original decors of the Grill restaurant and the Lighthouse bar on deck 10. Simple, bright colours look a lot better than the overtly-patterned stuff that's come to vogue since the mid-80s.

That said, the original decors are only special by hindsight. Overall Finnjet's original interior was pretty generic 60s/70s passenger ship interior architechture. Very good-looking never the less, particularly now that (in the Baltic at least) we've had the same stuff for the past 20 years.

Since they're doing so much Finnjet-related stuff for the new Finnish Maritime Museum in Kotka, what they really should do is a replica of Jetti's original Grill restaurant to be used as a café. :love@1:

why don't we all build a 1:20 or something model, around 10 m length  I saw something like that in Tv with one crazy french guy who build such a big working "model" of a cruise ship, it was more or less a real boat where he could sit in to drive etc :) At least at this size, using 2 real model gas turbines inside isn't even too crazy :-D

Me and my friend got a crazy idea to build about 20m long 1:10 FINNJET model, equipped with 2x 700hp gas turbines.. It would be fun to drive around the sea and confuse all the other ships watchers and captais...

http://www.picture-newsletter.com/ship/index.htm

Could this Radisson Diamond be the speculated "colossal" FINNJET II?

It just dosen't seem to be so big..
lenght 420feet/120m
width 103feet/31,3m
and only 350 passengers, 200 crew

Maybe a development of those FINNJET II-drawings?

With the exception of the fact that Radisson Diamond has overnight accomodation, I would still say Stena Discovery etc would be closer in design, whilst both designs are SWATHS or at least semi SWATHS, the HSS however has far more installed power and of course turbines (x4) resulting in much higher speeds required to at least match if not exceed Finnjet's performance.

By terms of the engines and other technical stuff, the HSS probably are closer to what the potential Finnjet II would have been like. On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me if in terms of exterior & interior design and layout the Radisson Diamond was a scaled-down version of the Finnjet II design.

Perhaps. But you also have to remeber the expenses of "operating" even a permanently moored museum ship. Very few projects like that have been successful, and those that have been have been in countries with much more money and more money-spending public than Finland. I'm afraid even in twenty years' time there simply wouldn't have been enough resources in this country to turn Jetti into a museum ship. In Germany it could perhaps have happened in terms of financial resources, but obviously the Germans don't have as compelling reasons for preserving the ship as the Finns do.
