Hull lenghtened?


Does anyone remember if Finnjet's hull was lenghtened on some dry docking on late 70s or early 80s?
I have a faint memory about this. Or was it some other ship? :puzz: Or just an april fool?

Anyway, one april fool was Finnlines planned a sister ship for Finnjet. And to celebrate relations to the Soviet Union her name would have been "Sovjet" :shock2:

Actually, I've heard some fairly reliable sources claim that a sister ship for the Finnjet was planned in the early 70s - she would have sailed for Finland Steamship Company on the Finland-Germany service alongside Jetti. But I'm not sure how accurate this claim really is.

The hull was lenghtened by a few meters in 1991 by the addition of the duck tail - a proper lenghtening was planned around the same time but the project was shelved as EffJohn didn't have enough money. You might be confusing Jetti was Peter Wessel, ex-Wasa Star, that was lenghtened in the mid-80s. Or Prinsesse Ragnhild, that had the same done to her. Those are the only two larger ferries that can think of that would have been lenghtened at the time.

For how the mega mega catamaran might have looked and be powered I think we need look no further than the Stena HSS!

Chances are it may have been built in the same yard!

Also Finnjet's original hull model used for hydrodynamic tests was modified in 1990 by VTT for the longer hull and ducktail, and used for testing behaviour of the lenghtened Finnjet.

That about 10 meters long model is now on display in the Finnish Maritime Museum in Kotka.

We could probably work out what effect lengthning would have by looking at the data from lengthening of outher ferries such as The Stena Brittanica/Hollandia or the old Townsend Thoresen boats in the 1980's.

I would speculate that with no power increase the reduction in speed for a hull 22 meters greater in length would only drop 2-3 knots as in part the maximum speed of the ship is detemined my hull length, actually reducing the length could have a more detrimental effect! or course acceleration would be effected by the additional weight.

Clearly there were inadequacies in the original hull causing the need for the addition of the ducktail in April 1990?

From what I have heard from other people, lenghtening ships usually has an adverse effect on their manoeuverability - of course this could (and undoubtedly would) have been rectified by additional fore and/or aft thrusters.

Of course, on the related side, lenghtening the hull would have meant the ship would be too long to pass through Kustaanmiekka, which back in 1990 would have nescessitated the construction of an entirely new passenger terminal into the West Harbour (as the current Tallink/Eckerö terminal wasn't built until the mid-90s).
