Now THAT's an idea that has merit! But really, one suite and maybe a dozen or so girls is all I need. You can keep the other 988! I really wouldn't know what to do with them. :P

What's ironic is that the U.S. no longer even has a ship-building industry! (at least not one that can build a cruise ship style ship) I believe when Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi tried to build the Pride of America for NCL America, they went bankrupt and the ship was built and finished in Bremerhaven. And THAT did take an act of Congress!

As far as U.S. cabotage laws go, I don't think NYC-Freeport-Florida would be allowed. Foreign flag ships can go out and back to the same port but things get difficult when beginning in one port and ending in another. Examples:

Cruise ships can't go one way from California to Hawaii. They can only do that route if they return to the embarkation port. Some cruises get around that by beginning in Ensanada, Mexico and then going one way to Hawaii, or v.v.

When ships reposition in Spring from California to Seattle or Vancouver, the following happens. California to Vancouver is fine one way because Vancouver is in Canada. But California to Seattle ships must end their cruise in Vancouver. They then sail 1 night cruises to Seattle. Both are international journeys and a passenger on the first journey is forbidden to buy a ticket on the 1-night journey.

Panama Canal cruises that depart the U.S. east coast and end on the U.S. west coast would be considered a one way cruise between U.S. cities. The law says they must stop at a "distant foreign port" to be allowed to do that. By law Aruba meets that definition so all such cruises stop in Aruba along the way.
Since Freeport is not a "distant foreign port" we could not sell car ferry tickets on that route. We could use the Finnjet for roundtrip (return) cruises with Freeport as a port of call.

The U.S. doesn't have a monopoly on stupid laws. Doesn't Silja Line and Viking Line ships make brief middle of the night stops at Aland in order to allow gambling and duty free sales?

Actually they tried to build it for United States Lines (no relation to the transatlantic company), but it went bust following 9/11. NCL then bought the unfinished hull.

To allow duty free sales yes (gambling however is allowed without it). That does have a point though as from the European Union's point of view allowing tax free sales between Finland and Sweden is essentially the same as allowing tax free sales between two US states. Fortunately for us the sneaky Alandians didn't join the EU tax union.

But overall I think the EU has more stupid laws than the US. I mean, we've got laws dictating how long fries must be, and how curved cucumbers can be. :umm:

for some reason the more civilized the country is, the more stupid laws it has as it seems.. :umm:

PS: Leave me maybe 20 of the remaining 988.. ;)

well looks like that leaves me 964 girls, nice.

Its amusing the stop at Mariehamn, sometimes its almost just a nudge on the quay side then off again.

I cant emphasize enough, dont ever leave the boat in Mariehamn, i was completely bored before geting out of the terminal let alone the other 10 hours marooned there.

Buy it ? Hmm. But it would be vise to convert Finnjet into a cruise ship without car deck structures in oder to make it profitable / lucrative business. The convertion project could be done with around 40-50 mil. Euros to make it interesting enough for longterm profitable cruiseline business.

just to keep an update on Finnjet's sale I would like everybody to notice the following figures.... Seacontainers currently asks for about 9 Million Euros for the ship (12Mln USD). It's scrap value is about 5 Million Euros (7 Mln USD). Still no sale in sight.

It would be interesting to note the cost of her laying up, ie port costs, staffing costs maintenance, insurance and sales agents.

Could estimate the deadline for giving up on sale.

Mathias has metioned a possible sale of Finnjet to owners in New York, i guess possibly as a Casino ship?

Has anyone heard more?

At least if true its a relativly easy and cheap place to get to in the US/Carribean.

I saw the Finnjet on 9/17/2007

Hello folks...I came across this forum by accident. My family and I were on a cruise that stopped in Freeport, Bh on 9/17/2007 and parked right next to the Finnjet. We all spent quite some time looking at it as it was as large as a cruise ship but clearly was not one like we had seen. When we returned, I started looking for it on the web an found this forum and other sites as well.

Just wanted to let you know the Finnjet looks great, it is parked at the industrial wharf right near the oil refinery. Itis not being neglected at all as we saw maintenance crew working on it while we were there and she was all white and clean, not rusty or ragged looking at all. In fact, she was clearly a well cared for and beautiful ship that could sail off at a moments notice I would bet.

Wish I had gotten some pics, but did not think at the time. Just wanted to let you guys know she is looking good and I bet will be put to more use in the future.-Todd Atlanta, Ga USA

Hey Keymaker

Good to hear they are looking after the old girl, i guess she must have looked somewhat unusual compared to the cruise ships more commonly seen in those parts.

Im pleased to see you were facinated by her, I dont know how much of this site you have read but she is super influential in both ferry and cruise ship design and is definately worth reading up about.

We are all mad and cant explain the interest, i live in England and should have no interest in a Finnish ferry, but have done for 18 years now!

Hope we hear from you more.

Thanks Paularai...a few more notes. While we were the the turbines/engines were running as there was smoke/steam coming from both funnels. The ship was painted all white except for the blue stripe on the hull and the funnels were solid blue. The stern access door was open and there was cargo or machinery being loaded to be used I guess. I could not see the left side as we were parked facing the bow and the right side, but we could see at least one officer near the bridge area. We thought it was some kind of ferry due to it's clean appearance and the enclosed decks which marked it as a Northern Atlantic ship. But as I said, it was clean and cared for, we all thought it was there for a brief stop since it looked ready to go.

Interesting that the engines appear to be running, its the Front large pipe at front of either funnel that deal with turbine exhaust the second 2 pipes are the boliers and aux diesels, the smallest 2 pipes are the main diesels (as fitted in 1981).

Of course it is a ferry but not i guess in the sence you are used to in the US, what do you mean by "Northern Atlantic Ship"? :puzz:

I have to say the removal of the writing and most of the color makes her look real bad, im interested to see what color scheme the new owners have in store.

Most of the old cruise ships that made the crossing from Britain to NY were in the N Atlantic and had more enclosed decks than the ships to now due to the climate of the crossing. These cruises were done for more practical reasons than today (transportation rather than vacation) and outdoor pools and decks were minimal. The Finnjet appeared to have very little open deck space and we also do not run across large ferrys that often had you thinking it was a large cold weather vessel.

You mean to say most old ocean liners. If they didn't sail to provide leisure time, they weren't cruise ships.
