FINNJET's sale

Okay okay,

it's a hard start .. ;) Nobody knows what to write.. so here I go...

Did anybody notice that Silja Opera and Finnjet are now up on http://www.vessels4sale.com, Seacontainers' own selling "table"?

What did you notice when reading the offer? What did you find special/unspecial about it?

Have you seen any further sale offers? I'd be very glad to talk about it all here

Not sure which obvious mistake in the sales adverts you are refering to but there are a number of discrepencies in the figures.

Welcome back Paul, I hope this Forum works better for you! Strange things happened on the old one...

I don't mean any special details of the offer and the figures to be wrong..

Anyway what I found quite interesting is the Deck Plans, which are not really up to date but still not completely old... they seem to be a mixture of several years. It has at least the different Container arrangement included and the Bow constructions are also up to date.. however the Panorama bridge is still pre '98 style...

As we now know there are rumours of companies with a potential interest in the charter or even purchase of Finnjet, especially intriguing is the talk of upgrading the diesel engines.

Does anyone have further details on how this might happen?

1. An upgrade of the exsisting engine block
2. improved fueling/larger turbo chargers
3. more powerful generator/gearbox motor
4. complete new engines.

What ever they do I guess they are limited to using the cramped area of the existing diesels as the turbine hall is fairly confined.

Of course they could extend the area currently used by the diesels at the expense of car deck but this is probalbly a bad idea economically on a ship with already very limited car deck!

I wonder if anyone in the industry could take a guess at the cost to re engine her?

One final thought, would it be feasable to generate additional electrical power from the 5 auxillary engines and divert some to the propulsion motors?

Today's Turun Sanomat had a small article about SeaContainers' ship selling progress, including also some details about Finnjet. Article can be read here (in Finnish):
http://www.turunsanomat.fi/verkkolehti/?ts=1,4:4:0:0,4:4:1:1:2005-12-14;4:18:1:0:0,4:346273,1:0:0:0:0

In short:
- Finnjet (and Opera) are being sold by the British ship broker Gailbraiths.
- Target price for Finnjet would be 13-17 million Euros
- Some requests for more detailed information on Finnjet has been recieved
- A 6 months extension for the charter in Louisiana should be decided by the end of the year

Are the Finns still following the news closely on Finnjet?

If the price keeps falling at the current rate we will be able to buy her ourselves in a few years time! every time the sales announced it seems to be for a little less.

Obviousely yes, yesterday there was a rather big article about "Life on Finnjet" in the Helsingin Sanomat..

http://koti.mbnet.fi/salomon/hs1.jpg
http://koti.mbnet.fi/salomon/hs2.jpg

There was also interviewed captain Rautavirta and chief engineer Stenius who actually said that finnjet's Atlantic crossing was probably the fastest a finnish ship has ever done..

Thanks Ilja a facinating artilce.

Interesting to read that the spring tides will present a problem. Also interesting to here that they had to remove part of the mast to pass under bridges!

Actually was it the mast or just an antenna?

personally the technical side is a big part of my interest in Finnjet.

Re.Engines upgrading, Paul:

Figure out first WHY? What would the new owner/operator
want to DO with the Finnjet? Her cardecks are of quite limited
capacity (height) and should be able to generate enough cash/
profits in order to justify the engine upgrading expenses.
The most cost effective way could/would be the upgrading of the
present diesel engines, NOT the gasturbines, unless the new operator requires speeds in excess of 25 knots...and that seems
rather unlikely in view of current bunkerprices....
Presently, nearly EVERYBODY slows down with the speed of their
vsls, with the exception of vsls with a fixed sailingschedule...
Lets us wait and see, what's happening..

Just in case there were any doubts re. the gas turbines of the famous
Finnjet, please take note of the following:

Gas turbine ship to gain auxiliary diesel engine
2/2/2006
In an effort to curb high fuel costs, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. plans to install an auxiliary diesel engine and electric generator into one of its gas turbine ships. If the procedure achieves the desired savings, more ships could be similarly reconfigured.
‘The engineering has been very technologically challenging. Our team has worked hard to overcome the difficulties and now appears to have succeeded in finding a way to accomplish it,’ said RCCL chairman and ceo Richard Fain.

The company plans to install the auxiliary diesel engine into Celebrity Cruises’ Millennium during a drydock late this year or early next. Fain estimated the procedure would take four weeks.

If the configuration proves successful with the first ship, it will be implemented on other vessels ‘as rapidly as we can,’ Fain told analysts during today’s earnings call. He said subsequent drydocks for the procedure could take less than four weeks.

Royal Caribbean operates eight gas turbine ships: those of Celebrity’s Millennium class (Millennium, Infinity, Summit and Constellation) and RCI’s Radiance class (Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Serenade of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas).

The auxiliary engine would generate electrical power for the ship’s hotel plant. Any fuel cost savings would be realized in 2007 at the earliest, Fain said.

Greetings, Bill

Interesting article Bill, Im sure others including any prospective purchaser will be watching with Interest.

I thought that many US cruise ships employeed turbines in part because the were considered cleaner particuarly for in operations in sensitive enviroments such as Alaska? I could well be wrong.

Paul.

Sorry to correct you, but: US FLAG ships (steamers) were nearly
always STEAM turbine powered, because they had no history/
knowledge with/of large SLOW running diesel engines. There were
simply no slow speed motor manufacturers available in the USA.

At present, there are no AMERICAN flagged cruiseships around..
(due to the high labour costs & unions). Only NCL is starting to
operate the Pride of Hawaii under US flag, on account of the Jones
Act ( cabotage, w.m. inter island traffic) she was completed at the
Lloydwerft in Bremerhafen, by the way...

So the 2 big cruiselines/operators (Carnival & R.C.C.L.) operate ALL
their ships under: Norwegian, Dutch,UK,Italy,Bahama,Liberia,Panama
& Bermuda flag. They HAVE experienced diesel engineers for their
ships. Some of the older Princess ships still have steamturbines.

When we talk about GAS turbines, we talk about turbines installed
for aux. power supply ( i.o.w. electricity ), even THOSE turbines are
going to be replaced, all on account of their high (and expensive grade) consumption....

I hope to have clarified a few points for you and other (?) readers of
this forum.

Well friends, it has been very quiet here for a long time now.

Heard from crew onboard that she has several interested buyers.
No information of who or even what traffic, but anyway it seems like she will continue her sailings and not left to suffer a slow rusty death at some dock or beach.

That's probably as much as we all know, of course interested buyers does not mean that they are really going to buy her.. :umm: The other main question is then where they would want to use Finnjet, I really hope it's not red sea or something like that :shock2:

Has anyone asked where Sea Containers will lay up Finnjet if no charter/sale does not happen after the current charter in Baton Rouge?

Unless negotiatations are well underway, I can see at least a spell of time layed up.

Just of a vaguely related topic, I read that Stena are beleived to be experiencing difficult times with their HSS ferries due to high running costs of their gas turbines!

A rumour from FCBS tells me that after the current charter ends, Jetti will be moved to England where she will be laid up until a buyer is found.

I've got to correct you, at the time when you wrote that post NCL America already operated two US-flagged cruiseships from Hawaii, the Pride of America and Pride of Aloha (ex-Norwegian Sky). Now those two have of course been joined by the Pride of Hawaii.

The story is that the Pride of America was originally ordered by American Classic Cruises from Ingalls Shipbuilding in the US, but post-911 the company went bust and the ship remained incomplete. In 2002 NCL bought the ship and made an agreement with the US Goverment that if they completed it they could place two additional ships not built in the US under US flag. (Normally, under US legislation, only ships built in the US may carry the US flag, and only ships carrying the US flag may sail in inter-US traffic, others have to call in a non-US port during each trip).

quite probably, at least that would be just what was originally planned. Anyway there are a lot of rumours around and according to different sources even quite a lot of companies would be interested in chartering or even buying Finnjet... mostly they seem to be speculating on getting the ship "almost for free" because of the high fuel consumption.

Let's see what happens, everything is open.

Just as another option, that strange Europe Star Line updated it's website again, now stating that Finnjet would make the exhibition tour across europe in 2007... :umm: Of course that site did not appear very reliable so far.

Interesting, I had quite forgotten about Europe Star Line.

Possibly not the best or longest term yuse but at least its Europe and she is actually sailing.

Did you hear whether they chartered another vessel when the Finnjet charter never happended?
